RF FILTER SELECTION GUIDE

RF Tunable FiltersSelection Guide

From system requirements to a specific model: check frequency range and architecture first, then compare bandwidth, insertion loss and implementation conditions.

Nominal frequency bands of two published modelsThe horizontal axis shows frequency in GHz. Published nominal ranges are 0.5 to 6GHz for SYRF8806HL and 2 to 18GHz for SYRF8818HL. This compares nominal ranges only; it does not represent frequency response, continuous tuning capability or guaranteed performance across the full range.Published Nominal Frequency RangeNOMINAL FREQUENCY RANGE / GHzSYRF8806HLSYRF8818HL0.5–6 GHz2–18 GHz05101520
Comparison of published nominal ranges, not frequency responses or measured curves. See below and the model documentation for specific conditions.

1. Define the frequencies to pass and reject

Before selecting a model, list the target operating band, occupied signal bandwidth, out-of-band signals to suppress, and size, supply, and control constraints. Nominal bands help narrow the candidates but do not replace validation of the full frequency response, bandwidth, and system suitability.

Band-pass models define a passband around the target signal; high-pass/low-pass models combine high-pass and low-pass functions for frequency selection. Even when the published frequency ranges are the same, the two types do not necessarily have the same tuning method, achievable passband or system performance.

Yi-Chip's publicly listed filter family collectively covers 30MHz to 40GHz. This range spans different models and must not be interpreted as continuous full-range coverage by a single device. For all 11 models and the original specification conditions, see the tunable filter selection table.

2. Screen Candidates Using Published Models

The following examples explain how to use the website specifications. They do not establish drop-in replacement suitability or system validation.

Example 1: Both cover 0.5–6GHz; distinguish the architectures first

SYRF8806-B is a band-pass model; SYRF8806HL is a high-pass/low-pass model. Both have a published nominal range of 0.5–6GHz. Both may appear in an initial shortlist, but the next step is to check the required passband, control method and electrical characteristics; frequency range alone is insufficient.

The body length × width values in the selection table are 10×10mm and 11.4×12.7mm, respectively. Space assessment still requires the specific package and land-pattern documentation. Body dimensions are not the same as PCB footprint or mounting dimensions.

Example Two: Both Cover 2–18GHz, but Typical Insertion Loss Requires Conditions

SYRF8818HL and SYRF8818 are both high-pass/low-pass models with a published nominal band of 2–18GHz. Their typical insertion losses in the table are 7dB and 10dB, respectively; the 7dB value for SYRF8818HL applies at 25% fractional bandwidth.

These two figures alone do not establish that one model outperforms the other at every frequency, bandwidth and configuration. Check frequency response, insertion loss and out-of-band performance under the target operating conditions, then consider package and control requirements.

Example 3: Near frequency boundaries, check the electrical characteristic range

SYRF8119 has a nominal band of 1–3GHz in the selection table, while the original datasheet electrical characteristics table specifies 1–2.85GHz; SYRF8913 has a nominal frequency range of 6–12GHz in the selection table, while the original datasheet's electrical characteristics table specifies 6.5–12.3GHz.

When defining system limits, bandwidth or acceptance criteria, specify the operating conditions and review the relevant technical documentation. The nominal range in the table must not be interpreted as a performance guarantee over the entire range.

3. Retain the conditions behind the numbers when comparing products

Typical Insertion Loss & Power Consumption

Insertion loss varies with frequency, bandwidth and configuration. First confirm that the data were obtained under comparable conditions, then review the system link budget. Power consumption below 1mW in the website selection table applies only to the listed filters, not to RF switches, digital step attenuators or other products.

Body dimensions and compatibility notes

Body dimensions do not cover every board-level implementation constraint. Confirm supply, control interface, package and land pattern separately. A comparison reference does not imply Pin-to-Pin compatibility.

SYRF8052, SYRF8513 and SYRF8526 have compatibility statements limited to the package and main functional pins, with differences in some functions and pin functions. Review the model documentation and actual circuit item by item before replacement.

This guide is based on the public selection tables and published specification conditions on the website. It contains no new measurement data. Specific designs still require the relevant model documentation and system testing.

4. Check Models Against These Five Requirements

  1. Operating frequency range, key frequencies and required signal bandwidth.
  2. Out-of-band signals to suppress and system performance targets.
  3. Target insertion loss, acceptable power consumption and their operating conditions.
  4. Supply, control, package, pad and PCB space constraints.
  5. Documentation or tests to confirm, and whether replacement of an existing model is involved.

Start with Specifications for 11 Tunable Filters to narrow the options, then go to RF Product Filtering & Same-Category Comparison to review the candidates, then use Product Inquiry on the specific model page to include the part number.
